Dental Sealants for Kids in Oakville

  Children's Dentist in Oakville

Sealants are an excellent method of preventing decay on the chewing surfaces of newly erupted permanent back teeth in young children.

A dental sealant is a thin layer of resin that is applied in the pits and fissures (developmental grooves) of molars and premolars. These deep grooves are difficult to clean with a toothbrush – especially when the toothbrush is in the hands of a child. Sealants have proven highly effective at preventing cavities in hard to reach places where brushing may miss from time to time.

With a source of food present, bacteria can easily hide in pits and fissures and cause decay. Once decay is established, it must be restored by removing tooth structure and placing a restoration. Sealants work to combat the need for restorative work by protecting teeth from cavity-causing bacteria.

How are sealants applied?

Sealants are usually applied in one visit and can be effective for several years.  Once the teeth are cleaned and polished, an abrasive etch is place on the tooth for the sealant to settle on.  The sealant is then dried using a special light.

Step 1: check for decay, followed by pumice (a simple cleaning)
Step 2: etch (roughen the tooth surface)
Step 3: apply thin layer of sealant & set with light, check bite

Your child’s teeth need to last a lifetime. Sealants are one of the easiest, most sensible, economical and preventive ways of preserving healthy teeth in young children. Sealants can save you money and from potential problems in the future. For more information of sealants, call or visit our dental practice in Oakville, Trafalgar Village Dental.
